On March 19, 2019, the Yunlin County Government, Health Promotion Administration and K-12 Education Administration jointly held the "Gold Award of the 4th Health Promoting Schools Accreditation Unveiling and Community Outreach" event with Lianshi Elementary School. The four elementary schools recommended by Yunlin County to participate in the accreditation process were all recognized with awards.
Among them, Lianshi Elementary School won the Gold Award. With the school vision as the cornerstone, Lianshi's HPS program is implemented through a series of health promotion courses, covering healthy body weight, oral care, vision care, no smoking and no betel quid chewing, sex education (including HIV prevention and treatment) and proper medication use as the main topics.
Principal Jing-zhou Wu said, making dental and vision care a focus of health promotion requires not only the integration of knowledge into the curriculum, but also concrete actions. Therefore, the school has integrated community resources to support health promotion activities. The school worked with Huwei Township Health Center, Yunlin Branch of National Taiwan University Hospital, Yunlin County Dental Association, the Taichuan Clinic, and a dental clinic to organize a variety of activities, including health competency seminars for parents, teachers and students, adventure games on the sports day, free dental checkups, student field trips, and community health education services. The school also brought health promotion into the community, organizing hiking events and advocacy services, so that children and community residents can learn and work together for health. These outreach efforts have not only gained a high level of community recognition and participation, but also established a healthy atmosphere in the local areas of Yunlin County.
